Earthlinked ::: Favorites 2007-12-26 02:58:48 A lesson to ALL manufacturers: He signed a contract with Guild in the late 1960's - and took them from nowhere to one of the largest acoustic guitar sellers on earth -- by playing only Guild on TV -- and in every concert -- you cannot buy advertisement like that!!! Then they dropped him in the early 1980's -- he was no longer cool!! By 1990 -- Guild was bought by Fender - to keep Guild from going into bankruptcy: Note to Guild: YOU DANCE WITH THE ONE THAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE DANCE! __________________________________________________
Earthlinked ::: Favorites 2007-12-26 02:49:27 I also play a 6 and 12 string guitar - and how I detested that drop D tuning!! He tuned both guitars so often becasue God gave him a perfect pitch voice and a penchant for tuning perfection!! Your right - I can see the 3 tuning forks on the top head of the guitar!! And the Guild name on the 6 string with the Muppets. How I would have loved to see the 1910 Gibson F-hole that he learned on!! But it seems proper that it was cremated with him!! __________________________________________________
Carol86414 ::: Favorites 2007-12-25 20:20:31 I love this song! I don't believe he's playing a Taylor in this concert. It looks like his Yamaha L-53 six string to me, and it sorta looks like a Guild on the 12 stringer. I saw JD's L-53 in Aspen this past October and it looks just like the one in this concert. About the fiddling he does with the guitar, JD played alot of songs in drop D tunning, which would make him seem to be re-tunning alot from standard to drop D or back for certain songs. Anyway great video, and some nice guitars! __________________________________________________
linnyben ::: Favorites 2007-12-23 15:27:59 I will try to get copies of it on DVD but will it will infrige any copyrights if I traded it others. __________________________________________________
Earthlinked ::: Favorites 2007-12-23 02:49:17 You make a guitar that can stay in tune for more than 1 song - and you'll be rich!! All guitars have a steel rod in the neck (2 rods on 12 string) from top to bottom - still no help!!! Today they have just introduced "automatic tuning" - you turn it on - strum the guitar once - and each string tunes itself - you turn it off and you're ready to go!! (About $1500 + about $1000 for installation - $2500 upgrade for your top of the line $3500 acoustic guitar!!!) __________________________________________________
Earthlinked ::: Favorites 2007-12-23 02:31:34 I have played Guild 6 & 12 strings for over 25 years - and there are tradeoffs on all guitars - the tone is great - but soft wood that makes this great tone - but it bends the neck due to the torque of the strings!! When they offer you $500,000 per year -- just to play their guitar -- and they give you 12 of them -- as backups - you take the deal!! When JD was on TV -- millions saw the name GUILD on his guitar -- you cannot buy advertisement like that at any price!!! __________________________________________________
puck57 ::: Favorites 2007-12-22 23:38:43 Notice how JD kept having trouble keeping the Taylor guitar in tune- he kept fiddling with it to get it in tune in this concert- in the Rhymes and Reasons tape he is trying to tune it as well. Funny after the info you gave on the two different guitars and Guild revoking his contract. You mean he could only play on guitars he had a contract with- I never would have thought he would have had guitar contracts- ha!! __________________________________________________
Earthlinked ::: Favorites 2007-12-18 12:37:10 I have seen this video a bazillion times - one of my favorites. But I just realized that this was late 1982 - because in the concert - he was playing his new Taylor guitar - in the Muppets video - (early 1982) he still has that beautiful Guild 6 string - Guild had not revoked his contract yet!! 10 years later - Guild was bought by Fender - to keep them from bankruptcy!! Hey Guild -- you dance with the guy that brought you to the dance!! __________________________________________________

cvps ::: Favorites 2007-11-24 14:41:21 It truly was a tough year for JD..between losing his Dad so suddenly and his and Annie's divorce in progress..(1982) __________________________________________________
cvps ::: Favorites 2007-11-24 14:39:39 i LOVE this video every time I watch it, it touches me deeply..he went on the trip because he said he "had a big hole right here" and put his hand over his heart. It was when he and Annie had decided to divorce and his heart was broken. __________________________________________________
